The main reason for why Stu Ungar changed from gin to poker was that Stu was a bit too skilled at it. So skilled was he, that no player possibly could equal him. Even the commonly called experts who were meant to be the greatest at gin rummy were blow away when they played with Stu Ungar. One of these gin rummy player was Harry Stein, nicknamed, "Yonkie". Mr. Stein suffered such a crushing blow at the hands of mr. ungar that he allegedly quit playing it professionally and never resurfaced at a gin rummy tournament.
Accordingly, with a honor like that it wasn’t very long before everyone became weary of wagering against stu. He could find no games and in his boredom he began doing something no one had done prior. He began offering starting handicaps to potential opposing players with the high hopes that they may compete against him if they believed they had an advantage. He deliberately played from a bad position and one account has it that he even competed against a regular bad egg. Amid the contest, he get a few words of wisdom that the bad egg was at it one more time but stu assured that he deduced of the fraudulent activity and he would still win, which of course, he did.
The same problem followed Stu Ungar into Las Vegas. He won so frequently that the poker rooms began asking him not to gamble on their casinos anymore. The basis for it was that other poker room players would not sit at the table if he were playing.
Stu Ungar is recalled better for his achievements in texas hold’em poker but he himself always maintained that he was far more accomplished at gin rummy.
He defeated Doyle Brunson in the World Series of Poker in Nineteen Eighty to become the youngest world champion. Because of his looks that made him seem far younger than he was, he was nicknamed, "The Kid".
